Tournament Specific Rules

About

Hat tournaments are common on the Ultimate scene. They are tournaments where players join individually rather than as a team. The tournament organisers form teams by randomly taking the names of the participants from a "hat". Teams are pulled out of a 'hat' but are balanced so that there is a range of players from beginners just starting to play through to experienced Ultimate players.

Hat tournaments have a strong emphasis on having fun and meeting other players. Players of all levels take part in such events from world-class players to complete beginners. Hat tournaments often have a theme and the Witch's Hat is no different, this event falls on the last weekend of October giving a Halloween theme for participants.

The Witch's Hat event was created and originally conducted by Rusty Slaughter and Waylon Parker and has continued annually since 2004.

  Tournament Specific Rules

About

The WA State Indoor Championships is a mixed gender indoor tournament held annually. In most cases the lateest edition of the official WFDF rules are in play with the following modifications. This format will provide a faster paced game, quality playing time for each game and promote the unique aspects of Indoor Ultimate.

Registration

  • Teams and players must be registered via the AFDA website (www.afda.com) online registration system.
  • All players must be registered and paid for prior to commencing play.

Fees

  • Fees are set by and approved by the WAFDA Executive Committee.
  • The host is responsible for the collection of all fees applicable to the tournament.

Gameplay

For each game, a disc toss will determine who starts on Offense/Defense and the starting end. A pull is used to start each point. There is a maximum of 30 seconds allowed between points, before the next pull must be thrown.
Games must start and finish at their scheduled times, it is etiquette to clear the court as soon as possible at the conclusion of your game to allow for a streamline schedule and all games can run uninterrupted.

    1. Time cap: Thirty (30) minutes, declared by the Tournament Director.
    2. No half time stoppage or end switch.
    3. End of Game: when the time cap is reached, the game ceases. If scores are tied then  the team in posession of the disc is deemed the winner.
    4. Time-outs: One (1) per team, per game. Two (2) minutes duration.

Field of Play
The field area is the area inside the perimeter of the court, as defined by the pre-existing lines of the basketball court. The lines, walls and nets around the playing field are considered to be out of bounds. If a disc makes contact with any walls or nets around the playing field while it is not in anyone’s possession, it is a turnover and the defending team assumes possession at a point closest to where the contact was made. The endzone is marked by the ‘netball court dome’.

Scoring

  • You score a goal if you catch the disc in the end zone that you are attacking. If you are in the air, your first point of contact must be inside the end zone.
  • The goal is the marked netball court dome.
  • When a team scores, the scoring team remains at that end and becomes defense, the other team moves to opposite end and becomes the offense.

Gender Ratio
All mixed divisions at WAFDA State Events will be played using the prescribed ratio rule (Ratio Rule A) to determine gender choice.

Each team may only play with:
1.    Three (3) male players and two (2) female players, or three (3) female players and two (2) male players.

The prescribed ratio rule features an equal representation of male and female players on the field throughout the game.

A7.2. Ratio Rule A (“prescribed ratio” rule):

A7.2.1. At the start of the game, after the first disc flip, an additional disc flip happens with the winner selecting the gender ratio for the first point. For the second and third points the ratio must be the reverse of the first point. For the fourth and fifth points the ratio must be same as the first point. This pattern of alternating the ratio every two points repeats until the end of the game (half time has no impact on the pattern).

Substitutions

  • You may only substitute with another player of the same gender.
  • Substitutions must be made only between points within the 30 second Pull time frame
  • Substitutions may occur in the case of an injury

The Pull

  • Before the pull, both teams must start on their defending baseline.
  • Their is a maximum of 30 seconds allowed between points, before the next pull must be thrown.
  • When Pulling, if the disc hits a net/wall it is deemed out of bounds.
  • Once the disc is deemed out of bounds, there is no brick, but the disc may be walked up to the peak of the goal dome/line.
  • If the offense catches the pull in the air, they must put it into play where they stand (or at the closest spot if they caught it out of bounds).
  • Catching a pull off the net/wall is treated as an out of bounds pull and may be walked up to the goal line.

Turnovers
A turnover occurs when:

  • The player marking the thrower reaches a stall count of Seven (7).
  • An incomplete pass is made via a drop, interception or the disc hitting the ground.
  • The disc hits a net or wall and it is deemed out of bounds.
  • If a turnover occurs inside an end zone the player retrieving the disc MUST play from where it lies (applies for both defensive and attacking endzones).

Stall Count
The stall count goes from 1 to 7. A player is stalled when the defender says the S in "seven". If there is a contested stall, play resumes with the stall count at 5 ("stalling 5"). All stall counts, initiated or re-initiated, begin with the word "stalling".

Restarting Play
In general, all players are encouraged to restart play as quickly as possible.  When safety is a concern (e.g. injured player on field, or if a sharp or hard object presents a threat), restarting play takes a back seat, but in all other situations, it is the responsibility of both teams to put the disc into play.  Here are some basic guidelines:

  • After a turnover, the team now on offense should restart play within ten seconds (unless it goes out of the play area or gets stuck in the net) and always as quickly as reasonably possible. Marker may warn "delay of game" and begin stalling if offense does not put disc in play in a timely manner.
  • On normal stoppages (travel, fouled thrower on incomplete pass), play should be restarted as soon as both teams are ready and in position.  Offense should not delay putting the disc into play by (e.g.) having the thrower put the disc behind their back and call a play.  Again, marker may warn "delay of game" if this occurs.

Safety
Players:

  • Must wear shoes that do not mark or damage the playing surface.
  • Must not wear uncovered jewellery.
  • Must not wear watches.

Obstacles
Some indoor recreation facilities have stationary basketball hoops, not to mention ceilings and walls. Unfortunately we have to overcome these obstacles and play around them. If the disc touches any of these obstacles it results in a turnover, even if the flight of the disc is not affected. The disc will be taken from the closest in-bounds position (excluding end zones) where the interference happened.

Ladder Points
Teams shall be awarded Ladder Points as per the following structure:
•    Win – Two (2) points
•    Loss – Zero (0) points

Tournament Ladder
The Tournament Ladder will rank teams based on the following:
•    Ladder Points
•    Points For minus Points Against
•    Points For
•    Head to head
•    Disc Flip
