The Pull
Each point starts with a throw-off from the goal line (“pull”). All players must remain in their end zone until the pull is thrown. At the start of the game a toss decides which team throws the first pull.

After a goal is scored, play stops. The team that scored stays in that end zone and throws the pull and becomes the defensive team. So, teams change their direction of attack after each point.

In-bounds and out-of-bounds
A disc is in-bounds when the receiving player is inside the playing field when they catch the disc. If you catch the disc after jumping in the air, your first point of contact must land inside the field. If you catch the disc in-bounds, and then momentum takes you out-of-bounds, you must return to where you left the field before you can throw the disc.

You are allowed to throw the disc so that it flies outside the playing field and then comes back in.

If the disc goes out-of-bounds, it is a turnover. It does not matter which team last touched the disc. Play continues from the spot where the disc left the field.

No running with the disc
You are not allowed to run while you have possession of the disc (“travel”). After catching the disc while running, you must stop as quickly as possible. Once you stop, you must keep one foot still, but you are allowed to move the other foot: this is called pivoting.

The 10-second rule
The thrower has 10 seconds to throw the disc. A defender can stand in front of you (remember: no contact!) and count aloud to ten in one second intervals. If the disc is still in your hand at the “t” of “ten”, the other team gets possession of the disc.

Turnovers
The defensive team takes possession of the disc (a “turnover”) if the offence fails to catch a pass, if they catch it out-of-bounds, or if it is intercepted or knocked down by a defensive player.

Turnovers also occur when:

the marker reaches “ten” before the disc was thrown
the disc is handed from one player to another without being thrown
the thrower catches their own throw without the disc being touched by anyone else
the offensive team tries to catch the pull, but drops it
After an in-bounds turnover the other team may immediately resume play at the point where the disc was caught or stopped.

Fouls, Violations and Infractions

Ultimate is a non-contact sport. Physical contact should always be avoided.
Contact that is dangerous or affects the outcome of the play is a Foul.
The thrower may not be defended by more than one player at the same time (“double team”).
The marker may not come closer than one disc diameter to the thrower (“disc space”).
The marker may not hit or grab the disc out of the hand of the thrower. They may however try to block the disc with their hands or feet after it is thrown.
If opposing players catch the disc at the same time, the offensive player gets possession of the disc.
Players are not allowed to create shepherds, picks or screens to obstruct the path of defensive players (“pick”).
Making a Call
If you believe you have been fouled by an opposing player, you can call “foul”, and play stops immediately.

After play stops, you explain what the foul was and discuss this with the other player involved. If the opponent disagrees that there was a foul, they may call “contest” and the disc is returned to the previous thrower. If they agree that there was a foul, they call “uncontested” and, generally, you take possession of the disc. Play is resumed with a “check”: the marker touches the disc in the thrower’s hand and calls “disc in”.

Scoring
You score a goal if you catch the disc in the endzone that you are attacking. If you are in the air, your first point of contact must be in the endzone. The first team to 15 goals wins, with a time cap of 90 minutes, but this can change depending on the level of play.

Substitution of players
After each point you may substitute as many players as you want.

SPIRIT OF THE GAME
Ultimate relies upon a Spirit of the Game that places the responsibility for fair play on every player. There are no referees; the players are solely responsible for following and enforcing the rules, even at World Championship. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play.

Perth Ultimate League – League Rules

Condition of Entry

1. By registering for the Perth Ultimate League:
   1. I agree to pay fees when they fall due.
   2. I agree to read, understand and comply with WAFDA by-laws, policies, codes of conduct and the rules of the Sport.
   3. I can obtain copies of the by-laws, policies, rules and the code of conduct from the WA Ultimate website (http://www.waultimate.com/wafda/policies).
   4.  This is a COVID Aware and Responsible competition, and a number of public health practices will be enforced. I understand that all participants must adhere to these guidelines as directed by the league and WAFDA officials.

Registration

1. Teams and players must be registered via the official online registration system specific to the current league they are playing in.
2. All players must be registered prior to commencing play for insurance purposes.

Fees

1. The team captain is responsible for ensuring that the team fee has been paid prior to the commencement of Round three (3) games. A late fee of $75 will be charged if team payment is not made before Round three (3).
2. League Fee for Juniors - For all players under the age of 18 at the time of league registration a $10 discount to the team will apply. Captains are responsible for ensuring the discount applies to that player's contribution to the team fee. 
3. League Fee for WAFDA Board Members - a $25.00 discount to their player fee will apply. Captains are responsible for ensuring the discount applies to that player's contribution to the team fee. 
4. Teams with outstanding league fees will be ineligible for finals and their players will be ineligible for subsequent leagues until outstanding fees are paid in full.

Rules of Play

The current WFDF Rules of Ultimate: https://rules.wfdf.org/ will be adhered to with the following clarifications and modifications:

1. Gender Split: Ratio Rule A (“prescribed ratio” rule):
   1. At the start of the game, after the first disc flip, an additional disc flip happens with the winner selecting the gender ratio for the first point. For the second and third points, the ratio must be the reverse of the first point. For the fourth and fifth points, the ratio must be the same as the first point. This pattern of alternating the ratio every two points repeats until the end of the game (half time has no impact on the pattern).
   2. Captains may agree at any point in the game to play with a gender split outside of these League Rules, so long as it does not involve more than four (4) players of one gender
   3. If a team cannot play with the gender-splits prescribed ratio rule, the team can play with a gender split for less than 7 players, so long as it does not involve more than four (4) players of one gender.
2. All teams must assign a Captain in the registration system.
3. All teams must assign a Spirit Captain in the registration system.
4. Teams may appoint an ADMIN role on the registration system to be the contact for team payments.
5.  Teams must have a minimum roster of 9 players.
6. All teams must have at least one (1) player with advanced rules accreditation and at least four (4) team members with standard rules accreditation. Proof to be submitted to the League Director by week three.

Safety – Players:

1. Must wear shoes.
2. Must not wear steel sprigs.
3. Must not wear uncovered jewellery.

Game Conditions

1. Perth Ultimate League
   1. Time cap: Sixty (60) minutes, declared by the League Director.
   2. Point limit: games are to 15; No half-time break or mirror.
   3. End of Game: when the time cap is reached, the current point should be completed to conclude the game. Draws are permissible during round-robin play
   4. Time-outs: Two (2) per team, per game, seventy-five (75) seconds duration. Time outs are allowed after the time cap has been reached.

Score Submission

1. Each team must submit their scores at the end of every game.  To correctly complete the score submissions, teams must:
   
   1. Scores must be submitted within 24 hours of the current game being completed.
   2. Enter their own score, and the score for the opposing team,
   3. Nominate two (2) male match-up players and two (2) female match-up players (of the opposing team) for Most Valuable Player (MVP) votes.
   4. Players are only eligible for MVP votes when playing with their registered team.
   5. Complete all 5 categories of the Spirit of the Game scoring system
   6. Scores of "0" or "4" must be justified with at least 2 examples
   7. Very Low or Very Highs will be highlighted and addressed with those teams involved
2. Failure to correctly complete the score sheet may result in a 'Disrespect' penalty being applied.
3. Failure to provide MVP votes and Spirit scores for the opposing team will cause your team to receive a Spirit score of zero (0) and your players will be ineligible for MVP votes for that game.

Penalties

1. Disrespect Points:
   1. Teams that do not correctly complete their online score submission each week.
   2. A team that accumulates a total of three (3) disrespect points over the league will not be eligible to play in the finals and will be held under review by the WAFDA Executive Board.
2. Pick-up Players: 
   1. If a team chooses to use a pick-up player, captains of both teams must agree to allow this and the team using the pick-up player 
   2. A pick-up penalty of two (2) points per player must be applied to the opposition’s score at the START of play
   3. If this penalty is not applied at the start of the game then it cannot be applied retroactively.

Forfeit

1. Teams are expected to take the field on time. If a team is unable to field at least five (5) registered players ten (10) minutes after the scheduled game start time, they automatically forfeit the game. If captains agree a game may go ahead, but the score will be reported as a forfeit.   

2. If a team forfeits with less than 24-hour notice a forfeit fee of $70 will be charged to the forfeiting team. 

3. The minimum number of registered players of one gender that a team can field without forfeiting is two (2).    

4. Teams will forfeit if they field less than five (5) players at any point.
5. A Forfeit will result in a 15-nil result game score and "O" for SOTG will be recorded against the forfeiting team.
6. A team that accumulates a total of three (3) forfeits over the league will not be eligible to play in the finals.
7. The opposition of a forfeiting team will be refunded/discounted $70 for the forfeited game.

Ranking Criteria

1. The number of games won, counting only games between the teams that are tied.
2. The fewest games forfeited.
3. Goal difference, counting only games between the teams that are tied.
4. Goal difference, counting games against all common opponents.
5. Goals scored per game, counting only games between the teams that are tied.
6. Goals scored per game, counting games against all common opponents.
7. Each team nominates one player to throw one disc from behind the goal line to the far brick point on a regulation playing field. Throwing order is determined randomly, by disc toss or otherwise. Teams are ranked in order by the distance from the resting place of each disc to the brick point, from closest to furthest

Finals

1. To be eligible to play in the finals, a player must be officially registered and played for that team in at least four (4) of the round-robin games in the current league.
2. Should a team that qualifies for a finals game fail to have enough eligible players, or be ineligible per other rules, they shall forfeit their place to the next ranking team on the League Ladder.
3. All teams must confirm with the League Director 5 days prior to the finals that they will field a team for their finals match. If a team cannot field a team they shall forfeit their place to the next ranking team on the League Ladder.
4. Placing Games - Wher possible placing games will be played for teams 
5. Semi and Grand Finals - When the game is completed per division rules if scores are tied then teams play one more point to establish a winner.

Disputes

1. Any disputes are to be raised with the League Director. 

Cancellation

1. Games may be cancelled in the event of:
   1. COVID-19 Directives
   2. Loss of Lights
   3. Extreme Weather Conditions as deemed by the League Director or WAFDA Executive Board
      1. Any cancellation of games due to extreme weather will be announced by 3 pm on game day

2. If a game is abandoned before the end of time due to injury, lightning, or any other reason, the score at the time of abandonment will stand.

3. General League Games that are cancelled will have a 1-1 Draw result recorded.
4. All efforts are to be made to reschedule Finals that are cancelled.
5. If finals cannot be rescheduled results will be finalised and joint rankings will be announced.

The Perth Ultimate league (PUL) is Perth's premier weekly competition. This mixed-team league has been running since 1998. Going through many different formats, it has been the backbone of developing Ultimate players and competition within Perth.

The current PUL has two divisions; 1 (competitive) and 2 (social).
