WA Ultimate - Latest News

Hosting an event

An Expression of Interest (EOI) must be received before midnight (Australian Western Standard Time) on the closing date advertised.

It should be sent to the WAFDA Events Coordinator via email (preferably in word document or PDF), and may include images as attachments.

Content

EOI Submissions need to include the following:

  • The host club/individual name
  • The TD name (if different to above)
  • The proposed location (number of fields, map)
  • Any relevant hosting experience
  • Relevant contact details
  • A COVID Coordinator must be identified
  • Anything else that you feel will help your case

The Host

The EOI should include the full legal names, ABN (if applicable), and address details of the Host.

The Tournament Director

The Tournament Director (TD) will be responsible for delivering the event.

EOI Submissions need to include the following:

  • The host club/individual name
  • The TD name (if different to above)
  • The proposed location (number of fields, map)
  • Any relevant hosting experience
  • Relevant contact details
  • A COVID Coordinator must be identified
  • Anything else that you feel will help your case

The successful Host will be notified by the Events Officer within 5 days of the EOI submission closing date.
The WAFDA will provide the Host with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Tournament Specific Guidelines

Western Regionals, Phoenix Has Risen and The Witch's Hat are WAFDA sanctioned events and are subject to guidelines and minimum standards. Please visit each tournament page for more information.

The following is a list of areas of consideration and tips to assist your hosting responsibilities if you need further assistance please do not hesitate to contact the WAFDA Events Director.

Preparing the Bid

  • Do you have a reliable Tournament Organising Committee (Key Volunteers)
  • Submit the bid to the Event Officer by the deadline.

Before the tournament

  • Read and sign the Memorandum of Understanding relating to your tournament.
  • Set up an AFDA Registration Page
  • Prepare an article to promote your event via the website and official mailing list to the WAFDA Communications Officer.
  • Continue to verbally promote your event at leagues and to club contacts.
  • Are you arranging a tournament function or party?
  • Keep in contact with any suppliers to ensure your orders are on track.
  • Provide any updates, changes to the Events Officer or Communications Officer to ensure website articles are relevant and correct.
  • Visit your venue, check the fields and facilities.
  • Do you have or need access to power?
  • Check with your field provider that you have the correct keys to access the toilets, clubrooms, lights if applicable.
  • Can you access running water?
  • Do you have enough fruit?
  • Where will you store perishable items?
  • Have you got discs fit for gameplay?
  • Have you made arrangements to collect any WAFDA owned items needed for your tournament; Shade tents, "Play Ultimate" banners, water drums or discs.
  • Have you contacted team captains with the draw, meeting times, competition-specific rules, when and how to pay?
  • Are your fixtures complete and advertised?
  • Is the draw fair and does it offer value for money with the number of games on offer?
  • Arranged all prizes required for the event?
  • Have you got enough team folders and spare pens?
  • Printed enough rosters, score/spirit sheets, evaluation forms, competition rules and tournament schedules?

During the event

  • Check the fields before gameplay for hazards.
  • Advising players of who to direct enquiries to during the event?
  • Procedure for notifying players of game start and finishing times?
  • Procedure for refilling water drums, transporting full water drums to each field?
  • Procedure for setting and packing up shade tents?
  • Do you have extra toilet paper for toilets or rubbish bags?
  • What is your back plan if something runs out (food/drink/stocks)?
  • Advise Captains where to hand in score sheets.
  • Who will be timekeeping?
  • Rubbish storage and removal?
  • Procedure for conducting the awards presentation?
  • Do you need to arrange change/money float?
  • Where/How will you store money collected at the fields?
  • What is the procedure for extreme weather conditions?

After the Event

  • Are the fields left in an appropriate manner?
  • Has all WAFDA equipment been returned?
  • Are any damaged items reported?
  • Have all teams completed an evaluation form?
  • Have you advised final playing numbers to the WAFDA Treasurer?
  • Have you prepared and submitted a tournament report within 30 days of your event?
  • Have you returned any keys to your field provider?
  • Have you settled all accounts relating to your event?

Event-Based Fees

All events are subject to State and National Event-Based Fees (EBF). These fees allow the host access to the WAFDA's resources as well as insurance coverage. The Host is responsible for the collection and payment of these fees.

Reporting

  • Tournament report to be submitted to the executive committee within thirty (30) days of the tournament completion date. Tournament Report template to be provided by WAFDA Events Officer. Specifically to record any recommendations and general feedback.
  • A tournament evaluation form to be completed by participants. Minimum one per team. The tournament evaluation template will be provided by the WAFDA Events Officer.
  • It is required that you write a general tournament article, a small paragraph (approx 200 words). This paragraph may be used by the WAFDA to include on the Association’s web site, newsletter, annual report, or further assessments of tournament hosting guidelines.

Assessment Process

Bids will be assessed by the WAFDA Events Officer and Executive Committee in the following areas:

  • Applicant meeting the deadline for submission
  • Host experience and relevant qualifications
  • Preference is given to the WAFDA affiliated clubs

In-School Sessions

WA Ultimate provide in-school coaching sessions at primary and high schools within the Perth metro area and regional areas. These classes include an introduction to throwing and basic game concepts. Sessions can be once-off or weekly instalments to assist your Physical Education needs.

The Ulti-Mates is now included in the Sporting Schools Program for primary schools. More information here.

Duration

A typical format is 60 minutes, however, the clinics can be tailored to suit your individual school needs, age and number of participants.

Teacher Professional Development Workshops

WA Ultimate also provides professional development workshops to Primary and High schools within the Perth metro area and where possible, regional areas.

Who is this workshop most suitable for?

This workshop is suitable for primary and high school teachers and professional organisations who are responsible for a school sport or want to introduce a new sport in their PE classes or learning areas.

Workshop Outcomes:

  • Learn to teach basic disc skills, different throws and Ultimate.
  • Introduce attendees to the numerous games and drills that can be played with a flying disc. 

How does Ultimate (Frisbee) fit in with your Physical Education Framework?

  • Skills for physical activity - object control skills, specialised skills, basic to technical skill execution
  • Self Management Skills & Knowledge and Understanding - benefits of physical activity, mental and physical well being
  • Interpersonal skills - Ultimate Frisbee is a self-officiated sport. Participants learn resolution of conflict, coping and communication skills in a team environment. Ultimate (Frisbee) relies on “Spirit of the Game” This places the responsibility for fair play on every player.

Duration

A typical format is 90 minutes but workshops can be tailored to suit individual school needs and the number of participants. Workshops can be conducted using an indoor gymnasium or an outdoor oval.


All our Coaching Staff are trained to essential criteria and a Working with Children's check. WA Ultimate will provide all equipment necessary for the session.

Equipment

WA Ultimate supplies and recommends the Ultra-Star and J-Star discs. The Discraft Ultra-Star is the approved, standard disc used throughout the world for Ultimate, and is suitable for all ages. J-Stars are the junior version of the Ultra-Star. Soft, flexible and fly beautifully. All available equipment can be found on our DISCS page.

Universities

Universities continue to be a mainstream base for capturing new players to the sport and providing a development pathway to transition from the junior division. Universities are entitled to compete at UniSport Nationals annually. The WAFDA encourages the formation and affiliation of University Ultimate Clubs and a supportive relationship will continue the development and playing of Flying Disc Sports in Western Australia.

Coaching Courses

Ultimate Australia Coaching Courses

Ultimate Australia provides formal coach education through nationally accredited coach courses.

Currently, Ultimate Australia offers the following accreditations:

  • Level 1 - Community Coach Course
  • Level 2 - Development Coach Course

Ultimate Australia Level 1 Community Coach Course

The Level One Community Coaching Course can be completed at your own pace.

No previous experience as a player is required to take part in this course, nor is any prior knowledge of coaching.

Accreditation Requirements

To achieve your UA Community Coach Certificate, you must complete (in any order):

  • Six online modules and final quiz (Approx. 2 hours)
  • WFDF Rules Accreditation – Standard (or higher qualification). (Approx. 10 mins)
  • ASC Community Coaching General Principles. (Register as a Flying Disc Coach. Approx. 2.5 hours)
  • Play by the Rules – Child Protection Online Course. (Approx. 1 hour)

Note: You will need to upload your certificates for each of these co-requisite requirements, in Module 7 of this online course.

Participants must be at least 15 years old to become accredited.

Assessment:

  • At the end of each module, there is a short quiz to test understanding.
  • At the end of the course, there is a quiz to test understanding
  • Participants can attempt these quizzes as many times as necessary.
  • Participants must achieve a 100% mark on each quiz to receive their certificate.

Pricing: This course is valued at $37.99 but is currently being provided to community coaches free of charge.

Ultimate Australia Level 2 Development Coach Course

The Ultimate Australia Development Coach Course is for coaches working with competitive Ultimate athletes and teams.
In particular, this course is tailored for coaches of Division 2 nationals teams, University teams, Under-18 State teams, or Under-22 State teams.
This course features a blended approach to learning, including online and face-to-face components.

Entry Pre-requisites
To access these modules – you must have completed the following pre-requisite requirements:

  • Community Coach Accreditation (Level 1) or Recognition of Current Competency
  • 20 hours of coaching after completion of the Community Coach course. Download UA Coaching Logbook.
  • WFDF Rules Accreditation – Advanced.

Accreditation Requirements
To achieve your UA Development Coach qualification, you must complete:

  • Play by the Rules – Inclusive Coaching Online Course
  • Sport Integrity Australia – Clean Sport 101 Course
  • Successful completion of both Online and Face to Face components of this course

Participants must be at least 15 years old to become accredited.

You can enrol and take the Level 2 course online component here.

 Pricing: The online component of this course is valued at $39.99 but is currently being provided to development coaches for $34.99

 Further payment will be required for the face-to-face component of the course (the cost will be available from the WA Flying Disc Association when these courses run).

 

WA Ultimate Accredited Programs:

Schools Coaching Program

The Schools Coaching Program (SCP) is a new initiative run by WA Ultimate to teach and upskill new coaches. The accreditation will prepare coaches to implement Ultimate lessons to student players in a primary and high school environment.

Are you looking for a little bit of extra cash? Or maybe you're interested in coaching Ultimate? Maybe you'd like to be the reason a student started playing Ultimate? Or are you a teacher who wants to learn how to teach Ultimate? Whatever the reason, WA Ultimate often have regular paid work opportunities, delivering in-school sessions.

Completion of this course will allow you to be casually employed by WA Ultimate to conduct coaching sessions at various primary and high schools throughout Perth.
