The Social Ultimate League began in 2007 to provide a simpler avenue for beginners to enter the sport, allowing an environment where players could learn to play against other players of a similar level.

In mid-2009 the Intermediate Ultimate League was introduced, which saw SUL return to it's roots as an 'introduction' league.  SUL 11 was the first SUL to run in conjunction with the Intermediate League.
