WA High School Championships 2008

Ultimate has been added to the list of sports officially recognised by School Sports WA.  The WA HIgh School Ultimate Championships 2008 has been organised by WAFDA as part of the SSWA 'Champion School' competition.

Entry fee Is yet to be determined, it will depend on number of teams to nominate. However, the fee should be no more than $50 per team.  All fees must be paid in full before the team is eligible to play.

Teams / Registration

Teams must register via the School Sports WA team nomination page.

Each team must supply at least one adult as Team Manager.

Each team should wear their normal school sports colours, and also provide an alternative colour strip in case of a clash.

Students are required to provide their own lunch, preferably in disposable wrapping.  There will be no food/drinks for sale on the day, however refills for water bottles will be available. 

Divisions

Schools may nominate teams in Boys, Girls, or Mixed divisions.  There is also separate divisions for Junior (years 8-9) and Senior (years 10-12) teams.

Schools may enter any number of teams in each division. 

Recommended team roster size is 12-16 players.  For mixed teams an even split of boys/girls is recommended.

8:50 – Arrival and warmup
9:10 – Welcome
9:15 – Captains meeting
9:25 – Game 1
10:20 – Game 2
11:15 – Game 3
12:10 – Lunch break
12:40 – Game 4
13:35 – Game 5
14:30 – Presentations
14:40 – Close/depart

(Schedule is subject to change, depending on number of teams) 

The draw will be announced as soon as team entries are finalised.

Tournament Rules

Games will run according the current WFDF Rules of Ultimate, with the following modifications:

Length of Game:

  • Games will be to 13 points, with half-time when the first team reaches 7 points
  • Games will be capped to a 45-minute time-limit to fit into schedule

Gender Split (mixed division):

  • Teams must field a 4/3 or 3/4 male/female gender split at all times
  • It is considered polite for the defense, before the start of each point, to match the same gender split that the offense has chosen, however this is not a requirement

Marking/Double-Team:

  • No player may be closer than 1m from the thrower
  • One opponent (the 'marker') may stand between 1m and 3m from the thrower, in order to attempt to block or restrict the throw
  • No other players (from either team) may be closer than 3m from the thrower

Misc

  • dropping the 'pull' at the beginning of the point is not a turnover
  • all references to 'brick', 'brick marks', etc. are ignored

Teams are reminded that at all times, the Spirit of the Game remains paramount.  Please refer to Section 1 of the Rules for some guidance to the Spirit of Ultimate.

Players will be expected to referee themselves, as is normal for Ultimate.  However, experienced Ultimate players will be on hand to help in case of any difficulties or confusion over rule interpretations.
