Youth - Info for Players / Students

Ultimate, sometimes called Ultimate Frisbee, is a fast-paced team sport played with a flying disc (frisbee). It is one of the fastest growing sports in the world.

Many of the aspects of Ultimate make it ideal as a sport for young people. Ultimate is non-contact and very safe. The equipment is cheap, and all you need is a single disc and some friends. Ultimate is most often played mixed, with boys and girls on the field at the same time.

There are also no referees at any level of Ultimate. The sport relies on self-refereeing to resolve disputes on the field. This means YOU and everyone else on the field referees the game themelves.  All players must take responsibility for making the game run smoothly.

Why should I play?

There are lots of reasons why you might want to try Ultimate, a few of them are:

  • Ultimate is different to anything you have ever played. It has a passing resemblance to various other sports, but it's not really like anything else.
  • Ultimate is unique in that there are no umpires or referees.  All the players make their own calls and decisions. This sounds weird, but it works!
  • Ultimate is cheap - it's one of the cheapest sports available in Australia.  There are no umpires to pay, no special fields or equipment required, no special clothing.
  • Ultimate can be played with both split and mixed teams.  Most leagues and tournaments in WA involve mixed teams, although some have split open/womens teams.
  • Ultimate is welcoming, friendly, and social.  The no-umpires thing only works if everyone plays fairly with good sportsmanship, and respect for the other players.  This means that Ultimate is naturally a very social and encouraging sport.
  • Ultimate is global.  You have the opportunity to play in State, National, and World championships, at the junior (U17/U19) and senior level.

How is it played?

Each team has seven players, playing on a field about half the width (37m) and the same length (100m) as a hockey or soccer field. The aim of the game is to pass the disc to your team-mates, and catch the disc in an endzone to score a point. No running with the disc is allowed, and the game is non-contact.  Any incomplete pass is a turnover to the other team.

Games are usually to about 15 points and last around 60-80 minutes, although some leagues have shorter games.

Take a look at some of the other pages under the 'Youth' section to find out how to get Ultimate in your school (ie. pester your Phys Ed teacher!)

I can't throw a frisbee.

There are currently no junior leagues available in Perth, however the various local clubs hold regular pickup/training sessions where new players are welcome to join in.  If you are in year 8 or older, come along!  Check our 'clubs' link to find out more about our affiliated clubs.  We are trying to get a regular youth league started, whcih will be as soon as we get enough regular junior players (aged 13-18).

We currently don't have any regular games or training for primary school students, however we can come to your school during one of your phys ed classes and show you how to play, then you can play at your local park with your friends!   Get your PE teacher to contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it to arrange a coach to come to your school.
