This year saw the 5th incarnation of the Witch’s Hat in WA. Back to a South of the River venue, we were pleased to be hosted by Curtin University in Bentley. Player numbers were up again, though we still opted for 5 teams to prevent a weekend of Savage play. This year there were an incredible number of new faces, plenty of students from Curtin University and some from UWA as well as a sprinkling of the usual suspects and some international travelers. The sun was out, the wind was bearable, the food was tasty and the Spirit was palpable.
The 5 teams were:
It couldn’t have been better weather for Ultimate, clear and sunny with a slight breeze. The rains from the previous week had softened the fields and the shaded veranda outside the club rooms offered a great view of the action on the fields. This year’s non-Ultimate game was, for the first time, Double Disc Court. While most players didn’t know what DDC was initially, by the end of the afternoon people were begging for more. The winners of the Women’s division were Primal teammates, Anna Haynes and Julie Hardt. Winners in the Men’s division were John Damiani and Christian Krogdahl. Day 1 games ended with the Catch the Clap the only undefeated team (3-0) assuring them a place in the final. As we all know, the end of games is not often the end of fun so tournament participants spent the evening relaxing at the Balmoral Hotel in Vic Park. Being a Halloween tournament, it was of course a costume party, which drew a few strange looks from other patrons. Never fear, we had the Evil Eye on our side… The second Finals spot was decided in the final pool game of day 2 when Toadstool pipped Hungry Hungry Hippos 12-10 in a nail-biter. While the outcome of the game was significant, there were still plenty of points highlighted with cartwheels and other such frivolity. Gotta' love the Witch’s Hat! In what has become a Witch’s Hat Tradition (patent pending) Toadstool and Catch the Clap were each given an additional 2 uniform shirts and allowed to select a male and a female player from the other teams. The honors were bestowed on Dan McNaughton and Sabrina Moro who were invited to play with Toadstool, and Andy Rathbone and Julie Hardt who were invited to play with Catch the Clap. In the 60 minute final, the crowd were treated to not only some great Ultimate, but a few crowd pleasers (thanks to some persistent heckling by Desmond Yap and friends) a “Layout Pull”, for instance. Catch the Clap pulled away at the end to claim victory in the Witch’s Hat V. The most sought after prize given at The Witch’s Hat is the Most Spirited team and Most Spirited Player (MSP) awards. After every game, each team is asked to award spirit points to two players from the opposing team who exhibit most strongly the spirit of the game, which is so integral to the sport of Ultimate. Spirited play means applying the rules of play fairly, taking the time to explain rules to those who are unfamiliar with them, encouraging positivity and playing hard with a genuine smile. Above all, a Spirited player or team will win and lose with equal grace. This year’s winners of the Most Spirited Team were Insanely Short + 2. This had something to do with the number of skipping, hammer, groping and arm linking points they played throughout the two days. The individual male MSP was Canadian visitor Chris Swinwood. Female MSP went to a recently re-surfaced Kierin Janes, currently playing in PUL with Brown Chicken Brown Cow. This year we had 3 sponsors that helped to make the Witch’s Hat V happen. Their involvement makes a big difference to the success of this tournament. Please let the following supporters know how much you appreciate their involvement in the Witch’s Hat. Their contributions make the Witch’s Hat special.
The Witch’s Hat was a fantastic weekend all around. Full results are shown below.
