Thanks you to all who attended the annual WAFDA Awards and Christmas function. This year members gathered for a BBQ in the park and were treated to the hospitality of JD and the culinary delights of Master Chef "Chook" Fowles. After a fine BBQ lunch President Andrew Hutcheon announced the worthy recipients of this years awards. And the winners are...
Team of the Year Nominees: Kaos, Rojo, Team Sizzle, Happy Pig Winner: Team Sizzle & Happy Pig Both teams have achieved remarkable goals this year. Sizzle dominated with local success, Hosted and won Phoenix and competed at 2 international tournaments. Happy Pig, after winning IUL moved up to first division and took Spirit in the recent PUL. Happy Pig also competed at AUC and AMUC (2006 was the last time any WA team achieved this) in the same year not to mention ran 2 tournaments themselves. Coach of the Year Nominees: Steve Baker, John Damiani, Natalie Kippin & Anna Haynes Winner: Anna Haynes Delivered Ultimate to over 1500 students this year, attend the National Juniors Camp in January, the Development Camp in Brisbane in July and has provided coaching in Div 3 & Div 2, conducts coaching for PRIMAL Ultimate Club and recently coached at the WA Development Day. Tournament of the Year Nominees: Western Regionals, BUFF, Winter Crowns & Australian Ultimate Championships Winner: Australian Ultimate Championships. TD: Rod Arnold Organised and ran a successful National tournament hosted over 430 players from around the country. Recruiter of the Year Nominees: Desmond Yap, Anna Haynes/Natalie Kippin, Sean Fourie/Dave Smith and Kendall Thorn Winner: Sean Fourie & Dave Smith Entering a complete team in to div 3 called Turtles. Turtles took our Spirit and the winner’s Trophy for their first effort. A team of beginners, Dave & Sean coached and organised the team each week, promoted Spirit of the Game and provided strength and numbers to WAFDA Division 3 competition. Club of the Year Nominees: Sublime, FEAR, Happy Pig & PRIMAL Winner: PRIMAL Ultimate Club After competing at the last 3 AUC with a placing of 6th at this year’s event, PRIMAL underwent a name change and sought external funding to recruit new players and begin a new league. With 50 new players competing the Club has just completed its first league and will commence it’s second in early January. PRIMAL has informative up to date website, strong policy and governance structures and accredited coaches. Recently the Club purchased their own discs as a fundraising venture and has commenced junior development sessions. This Club has gone from a Women’s Nationals Team to a fully fledged Club offering a variety of Ultimate products to the wider community. Administrator of the Year Nominees: Anna Haynes, Natalie Kippin & Steve Baker Winner: Steve Baker Steve holds the portfolios of Youth Development Officer and Coaching Coordinator in addition he also WAFDA's resident IT and Website Guru. Whilst contributing volumes of work for the Association he has also run the last 3 WAFDA leagues to help raise funds for his Club FEAR. He continues to make himself available to assist with the delivery of Ultimate session in schools and on Monday nights runs the Kwinana Pick Up at Medina Oval promoting Ultimate to the local community. Outstanding Service Nominees: Natalie Kippin, Steve Baker, Anna Haynes, Kendall Thorn, Lauren Dyke, David Shackles, Dave Smith & Sean Fourie This list alone is impressive and is great to be able to recognise the valuable volunteer hours contributed by these people. Winner: David Shackles D-Shack has led the Disco Inferno team since inception. They have competed in SUL & IUL and in Division 2 of the 2008 Phoenix Has Risen Championships. After winning a Kellogg’s competition the team displays memorable team uniforms! Recently Dave has volunteered his time to assist in the new Yokine League captaining a team of beginners and teaching them the game, making sure everyone is included and enjoying the Ultimate experience. D-Shack is an asset to the WA Ultimate community. Richard D’Almeida Award: Rookie of the Year Richard D'Almeida - Most MVP points accumulated in SUL/IUL - Richard was an up and coming star after playing the sport for only 8 months and was showing great promise. He also was a part of the UWA Ultimate club and a member of the committee. He was always enthusiastic for the sport and just loved playing the game. Winner: Louis Masarei Matt Butler Award: WAFDA Player of the Year Matt Butler - Most MVP points accumulated for PUL - Matt was part of the resurgence of Ultimate in Perth back in 1997. His spirit and enthusiasm for the sport saw him admired by players all over Australia and the world.
