Winter League 2009
Posted by Steve Baker
Wednesday, 10 June 2009

The 2009 winter edition of the Perth Ultimate League begins on July 8th.  The new league incorporates:

  • Division 1: Perth Ultimate League
  • Division 2: Intermediate League
  • Division 3: Social Ultimate League

Yes, the much-hyped 3rd division is finally here!

There will be learn-to-play games for new players, and pickup games for experienced players, from 17th June to 1st July, a perfect time to introduce new players to the sport.

As a general guideline, here are some hints to help you decide in which division you should look at:

  • Div 3 – perfect for brand new players or those with up to 6-12 months experience, ultimate terminology is lost on me but keen to give it a go without being overwhelmed
  • Div 2 – suitable for players with at least 6-12 months experience (2-3 SULs) or more. Players will have reasonably good throwing skills, understand most of the rules, be familiar with basic Ultimate terms such as force, mark, stack, cutting, and open-side/break-side.
  • Div 1 – highly competitive league for those who regularly play in national-level tournaments.  Very good knowledge of the rules, familiar with advanced terminology, plays and tactics.

If you don't have a team, join the 'I need a team' team and you will be assigned to a team before the start of competition.

Although some teams from the old SUL will move to Div 2 as they are, some individual players may be better suited to Div 3 whilst they hone their skills and prepare to move to Division 2.  Some teams may mostly stay in Div 3 and have only a few players move to Div 2. Individuals in these situations should register for the 'I need a team' team, they will be assigned to a team before league starts.

NOW is the time to RECRUIT new players for Division 3, the perfect environment for them to learn Ultimate.  Start bringing these people to the pickup games before league starts, and they'll be ready to get into when the new league starts.

The exact timing for games will be finalised when we know the total number of teams in divisions 2 and 3.  At the moment we expect it to run like this:

  • Div 3: 6:30 - 7:15
  • Div 2 - slot 1: 6:30 - 7:30
  • Div 2 - slot 2: 7:40-8:40
  • Div 1: 7:30 - 9:00
