Womens Nationals Teams 2009 - 2008/10/03 12:44 Hi All,
I hope you're all well.

Everyone is beginning to talk Nationals '09 and it’s all getting a bit exciting! I'm posting this on a behalf of a few of us who have been brainstorming recently!

As most of you will be aware, there are 3 different teams to register interest for. In talking with various other people, there is certainly enthusiasm to try get a really strong core group of players together in one team and to have an external/independent, non-player, and experienced person to coach the team.

Personally, I am in support of this. I also know there are people with similar ideas, and possibly people across different teams with this same idea...which kind of means people are hoping for the same players to join their team?!

We would like to know how many people would be in support of an 'across the board grading' to form an A and B team...or even better an A, B and C or an A and B1/B2 (if enough numbers)! As I said, there are lots of people enthusiastic to put together a strong and competitive side for nationals and play to win...so would people be interested in general WA try outs?

Perhaps with the B and C or B1/B2 options we can accommodate for people who are more interested in the nationals experience for balancing fun, competition and player development, have less time to commit to regular trainings, or maybe would only like really like to play nationals to play with their friends in the same team etc...all things which I don't think can be determined without people meeting and coming together to work out what they want/what the common feeling is.

This leads to the next point..

Perhaps we can hold an information seminar in the near future and ask an independent/outside person to chair the meeting/session?

Please can you express your opinions about this.

We think it would be great to share opinions from the start and provide some opportunity for open communication. A few of us feel a little out of the loop of what a lot of people are thinking/hoping for from these nationals and we also know there has been conflicts of interest in the past. I haven’t played nationals with WA before and some of the others I've spoken with haven't played nationals in a while and we don’t want to get caught up in old news! We think it would be great to try start fresh and we think open communication is best for this?

So
– Who supports the idea of an open meeting to share ideas/discuss options for Nationals 09?
– Who supports the idea of over all grading of interested WA women to bring together the strongest group of WA women in 1 team

Please share other ideas too!

Re:Womens Nationals Teams 2009 - 2008/10/03 15:10 Primal Women's Ultimate Club (PWUC) are in the process of reviewing Expressions of Interest from prospective coaches and a coach will be named at the end of October. A team selection policy will also be in place to select the selectors and to select the final team(s).

ALL women are invited to join in Primal's training sessions and be part of the training squad. The appointed selectors will use the Club selection policy to form the team(s).

We plan to have casual throwing sessions after the Women's Premier League and before the Christmas holidays. Official Nationals training will start at the end of January 2009, on Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings (venue TBC). The aim is to have the team(s) selected around Feb/March.

A Club information session will be held in November for interested players. A personal invitation will be distributed to all female players in the coming month. There will be no obligation to join Primal should it not fit their player requirements.

Primal's objective for Nationals is to field an A and B team (numbers permitting) and are very eager to see WA Women's Ultimate play to the best of their abilities. In saying this, we genuinely want ALL WA women to attend Primal training sessions in order to pool our collective talents.

Re:Womens Nationals Teams 2009 - 2008/10/03 15:38 Hi all...

Just a word to say that I DID play nationals last year with WA, and yeah, I'll admit that there was some tension in the team...but I can say with honesty that every girl I've spoken with since is really not "caught up in old news" as you put it. Primal as a team has recognized that everything did not go smoothly, and did a player feedback at the end of last year, which believe it or not, was actually read and listened to!

I think everyone involved has taken a "live and learn" type attitude toward the situation, and we all want to field the best team possible. By adopting a selections policy, we are ensuring your abillity/committment to the team is the most important thing, and not who you know! As someone who may not "make the A team" I am 100% behind this policy as I want WA to field the best team possible!

Towards that end, I do hope everyone will come along to the Primal information session and see what we are offering. If it's not your thing, that's cool...we're all different people and we've all got to do whats right for ourselves.

Re:Womens Nationals Teams 2009 - 2008/10/03 17:24 Australian Ultimate Championships (AUC) is a national club tournament.
In the past WA has sent representative teams to AUC as we have lacked the player base to establish sustainable clubs. As the numbers of WA Ultimate grow and WAFDA administration strengthens, we are in a healthy position to encourage and support the formation of WA Ultimate clubs. The location of AUC each year does not change the fact that it is a club competition and to compete in said tournament you should ideally be a member/player in a club. A team is put together for a specific task/tournament and that is what WA Ultimate has had to rely on in the past. In recent years club identities have started to emerge, a club is an ongoing commitment with a long term plan to recruit, develop and achieve.
Belonging to a club gives a sense of pride, healthy competition, identity and comradeship.
Just ask Bakes what it means to be a part of FEAR, ask JD what it like to build a club from scratch, the feeling he gets when wearing the Sublime jersey, ask Deb what it felt like to lay-out for the first time in her PRIMAL jersey.
To consider a team scenario is a step backwards, we need to plan for the future.
It can start out with a group of friends with a common vision or it can be a purely geographic reason but whatever the foundation it is strengthened when united under a club banner. A strong club culture is what needs to be fostered, it’s going to take a lot of hard work and it is not going to happen over night. Teams come and go, clubs are for the future!

Re:Womens Nationals Teams 2009 - 2008/10/05 17:58 It seems a little contradicting to go from saying that we do not have enough premier women in WA to form one women's league, yet we have enough to spread out over (at least) three wa 'club' womens teams for nationals.

We have to be realistic here...already three teams initially asked people to register interest (unamed team A, unamed team B, and Primal) plus Primal now say they want an A and B team. Do we not think it would be better to concentrate similarly leveled players together into teams and actually have a shot at Nationals? The other issue with clubs fighting it out for a spot in Nationals at Regionals is that some teams with one or two great players may miss out and therefore those players will miss out too.

I think we either get all the girls together and grade them, OR we let each 'club' enter a team and hopefully all the top women will be able to compete at nationals.

Re:Womens Nationals Teams 2009 - 2008/10/05 20:11 I'm not sure what you mean by contradicting? The debate put forward was to keep the women's league to the top level players in Perth my response was that was an error in judgement as we DO NOT have the player base in Perth to turn players away. If we included all female players then yes, we do have enough to form a women's league.

Primal is a club going into it's third nationals campaign of course the vision of the club is to have more than one team. This is an ongoing goal, why would you ever limit the size of your club?
Nationals is not meant to be about individual achievements it is supposed to be about a team performance, any player within that team knows there is a chance their team may not qualify.
WA is generally allocated 2 spots at AUC - this number will not grow until we have more teams/clubs competing at Regionals each year.
There is no restriction for the number of teams/clubs at Regionals, if you have a team/club then enter and give it your best shot. I know if Primal miss out then no problem I will sign up as a volunteer and have another crack next time around either way I will remain loyal to my club and teammates. YEAH PRIMAL!
