 The future of PUL & SUL - 2008/05/13 20:36 With the evolution of some of the early SUL teams and the changing structure of SUL (I think there are many more PUL players playing than the original rules allowed), it seems the time is ripe to also change the dividing lines between the two leagues.

If the level of competition is going to improve (as I think we all believe it continually should), then I think the old PUL/SUL format should evolve into a Tier 1/2 format. Tier 1 is 6 teams, Tier 2 is all the rest. At the end of the league the teams that finish 5&6 in Teir 1 move down into Tier 2. The teams that finish 1&2 in Tier 2 move up into Tier 1. Re-enforce the "only 2-3-4(?) Tier 1 players allowed on each Tier 2 team (for coaching and mentoring purposes). If a plaer is on a T1 team and also a T2 team which then moves up into T1, that player has to chose between the teams.

New players still have to begin playing on a Tier 2 team.

The primary difficulty with all of these ideas for how to make things evolve is that it takes volunteer hours that WAFDA doesn't have. We need more involvement from the members if anything is going to happen and grow in WA.

 Re:The future of PUL & SUL - 2008/05/13 21:35 Rules stipulate 2 PUL players per team on the park at any one time. You are definitely right there are more than the rules state. Couple of reasons though, mainly the captains agree to it or the players don't read the rules! Many more players are progressing up to PUL as a pick up player to try it out or to challenge themselves. SUL being used as a chance to work on different positions and polish up some throwing.
Players as they gain more experience need to start recognised that SUL is a developmental league and perhaps its not the best format for them to continue playing in but if they have no alternative then they are most likely to stay as they are.
With an increase in players I would support a 3 tier set up. Social/Beginner League, Intermediate/Division 2 League and an Elite/Division 1 League. This will allows players to find a level that suits them, also allowing a development pathway. Opportunity to have more than one game to suit your gaming requirements. Team nominations can be limited eg 6 teams max in Div 1. Field space is becomming an issue, three time slots could offer a temporary solution or run a particular division on another night/venue. The three divisions could be run by three different volunteers, one league with a small amount of teams would be easier than one director overseeing all divisions. Better communication with teams would be easier reached with less teams to coordinate. Smaller jobs to volunteers may resolve some overload and burn out issues.

 Re:The future of PUL & SUL - 2008/05/15 13:32 Three tiers seems a bit far off at this stage, I don't think WA has the depth of players for that yet. It is also worth noting that the Social League standard has improved a lot and that Clubs like UWA and Curtin have had or are continuting to run beginner leagues.

Another problem is just the lack of women playing. Almost all female players are playing in both leagues so that promoting and demoting teams is difficult.

Agreed the tiered system is not going to happen over night. Winter leagues are about to commence and a slight drop in numbers is expected. That's great that Unis have their act together on recruitment/running leagues but WAFDA needs to address not only promoting the sport outside of Unis but also continuing to establish pathways for development. Could PUL trial a Div 1 & 2 in the Spring?

 Re:The future of PUL & SUL - 2008/05/19 11:13 I think that more leagues will be in place by the end of 2008, whether that be as more tiers of PUL/SUL or in different locations and times. And I think the spring is a perfect time to target such initiatives.
In a nutshell, the only thing I'd like to add is that rather than waiting for enough numbers or depth to develop, WA clubs (under direction/suggestion of WAFDA) need to be forced seek out players to continue to be competitive. This is what drives the uni teams year after year, and is what can drive the other clubs too. It is easy to be complacent about simply being in PUL.

Out of interest, has the clubs grant policy been made active? If so, could it be retooled for reaching recruitment targets?

Finally, will any of this be discussed tomorrow night at the AGM?
