1 PUL game and playing later - 2007/10/10 07:25 Hi All,
Just thought I would put something out there as the AGM is coming up so perhaps people can have a forum for discussion on the topic pre-AGM.
I personally am not a fan of the 1 game and late start of PUL. The 1 game bothers me because I find that if a game is one sided, the losing team has no oppurtunity for redemption and the wining team doesn't get a challenging game. I also like the satisfaction of playing more teams more often. I think is raises the competetive spirit.
Starting at 7:20pm also disappoints me as I find I am "hanging around" after work for hours and then not getting home or eating dinner until 9-9:30ish. The pub is no longer serving food which I think takes away from the social aspect and I find people leave straight after the game rather than hanging around to chat or catch up with friends.
I have heard these types of comments from others but I think because we are all just one big family no one wants to step on anyone elses toes (including me). I love ultimate and the people who play and organise the sport and that is why I am making this comment.

Re:1 PUL game and playing later - 2007/10/10 08:32 I would agree with the late start, mainly due to the fact that I like to go to the pub after but find I have to rush from the field to get there in time. Now I can understand the reasons behind having the game later so that people have the option to play both, but I also find the social aspect is suffering because of it.

This is especially true between SUL-only and PUL-only, I would love to get to know more SUL players socially but we can hardly expect them to hang around for 80 minutes to come down the pub with us.

I'm going to disagree with Esther here on the one game per week. I am actually enjoying this aspect more. I actually care who I am playing next week now rather then just rocking up and finding out on the night. I am finding that the games are closer because teams that fall behind early actually have a chance to come back and I am getting into the games more.

Re:1 PUL game and playing later - 2007/10/10 14:13 I'd like to see an earlier start to PUL games, the old 6:30 start time was ideal. The later starts either means I play on a full stomache or eat at 9:30pm. It also means hanging around until 7:20pm to play 1 game (8-10 games a league). I don't mind the 1 game concept (though it does make for short leagues), I can see where this is going, it's just a shame that SUL and PUL don't get to mix. Could SUL and PUL start at the same time ?, or give PUL the earlier time slot.

Re:1 PUL game and playing later - 2007/10/10 16:49 WAFDA has made a big change to the format of league this year and with membership numbers more than doubling one might have to say that the new system is working. PUL & SUL running at the same time wasn't as effective as it is now.
We need experienced players in SUL to ensure the game is being taught right to the new players have the time slots not only allow players to enjoy both divisions but allows SUL players to view a Div 1 game or perhaps even test their skills by playing a game.
If getting to know the SUL players is really what you want and also the choice to play an earlier game then there is the option of actually joining the SUL or at least giving it a go. This will only help the league grow and improve the quality of Perth Ultimate.
In reference to shorter leagues before the games were 2 x 40 mins now they are 1 x 80 mins so really we are getting the same game time.
Let's remember that it been a pretty miserable winter so regardless whether games finish at or 8 or 8.30pm most player would have chosen to get home and get dry!
Day light savings kicks in soon making it perfect beer garden weather. Although The Wembley stop serving food at 9pm there is a dominos or a Chinese place near by and it’s never been any trouble to eat this at the wembley before.
UWA Sports Park really takes good care of Perth Ulti.
The fields are awesome and the price is fantastic, there is no way we could offer the same inexpensive league if were to try split the leagues into different nights.
Perhaps there is a need for a social club or committee for WAFDA for organised social events;
I hardly think Wednesday night at the pub should be the only way to socialise with SUL players?
Any volunteers?
AGM on Monday folks, would love to have you there!

Re:1 PUL game and playing later - 2007/10/10 16:57 Interesting points.

I guess I am a fan of the times etc since I play both leagues. Remember you aren't really limited to only playing PUL. Hopefully if you are keen to play both it provides some incentive to either form a team or at least get in contact with a SUL team, there are often teams after an extra player and it's reasonably flexible.

I agree that with the two time slots there is a unfotunate discontinuity for SUL and PUL players socially. It is definitely something that the current WAFDA group is aware of and trying to address.

While this is the case, other oportunities are also available to get to know one another through Mens & Womens League and other tournaments. I understand several SUL players are participating in the Witches Hat and Shenanignas Tournaments. It's refreshing to go to a tournament where you don't know everyone because you see them each week at league.

Anyway great to hear some debate and perhaps a WAFDA position beckons ........

Re:1 PUL game and playing later - 2007/10/10 19:17 It is good to see this discussion - there have been major changes to league this year and this warrants discussion and evaluation.

I would just like to point out that while it is incredibly important to try and encourage new players and develop the sport, doing this at the expense of possibly turning away more experienced players would be ultimately detrimental to the sport and thus if people are unhappy with certain aspects of the current structure then this needs to be assessed.

In a personal response to the above comments, I have found that playing 1 rather than 2 games is less physically challenging (and tends to be less overall game time). Furthermore, the break between games enabled the socialising that is now more difficult.

One of the important things that really drew me to ulti when i first began was the welcoming and social atmosphere, and I am afraid that the current structure does not make this readily obvious anymore. It would be a shame to lose potential players in this way.

I hope that these comments will be taken for discussion and not as criticism as I think that WAFDA is to be commended on their excellent job in recruiting many new players to WA ultimate this year.
