Re:1 PUL game and playing later - 2007/10/10 23:47 AMY FOR PRESIDENT

Forget John Howard and Kevin 07, its time we elected a no-nonsense, balls bigger than ben hur, morally uncompromised, straight talking leader. Someone who has the nutz to say to those corporate bastards 'you know what, I do play frisbee. build a bridge.. and give me your money'

I agree with what you have said amy. Classic case example - George. He had the potential of being a solid bit player on the men's sublime team, but has thrown away his talent, and for what? So that the corporate fat cats can bring in n00bs, and thus bring in more $$ at the expense of mediocre veterans? Good work dude*. You should also take the karma meter as a barometer of the public's acceptance of you.

Re:1 PUL game and playing later - 2007/10/11 12:41 It's great to have feedback from members always - wish there was more of it.

Another question to pose:
Is it REALLY WAFDA's position to be responsible for all the social interaction between members or to promote flying disc sports in WA?
I'm certainly not saying that this does not go entirely hand in hand, but did the five minute break between games really enable adequate socialising?
If a game starts at 7.20 surely players are arriving earlier than that, cleating up, having a throw, socialising or catching the end of a SUL game before their PUL game?
We can't deny that Perth is growing in numbers and developing in skill level, we stunt the growth of the more competive players but not providing a higher level of ulti too. It has to go both ways surely?
If WAFDA provided attemped to provide more social events throughout the year would players show their support and show up or would it be the same 10-15 ppl who always show whether its an offical social event or not. How many members attended the 2006 xmas function?
Free food & beer didnt even help the numbers.

I speak now purely as a player who has played in both leagues - Playing in the social league allowed me to meet many new players and also put back into the sport by helping them learn the game and have a really good warm up. A Div 1 game allowed me to get some competitive higher level ulti time. If there wasn't the 2 levels and it continued only as a social level environment (and oly mixed at that) then certainly my interest would quickly fade with only a hit once a year at nationals or phoenix. Whether I'm on the committee or not I know I'm not alone on this one.

Re:1 PUL game and playing later - 2007/10/11 14:41 Currently, PUL & SUL can not run concurrently as there is not enough field space (this varies throughout the year ie. demand is greater when its footy season etc). We could relocate, but WAFDA has worked hard to establish a working relationship with UWA Sports and new fields are extremely hard to secure. WAFDA has considered having the leagues on different nights but this requires players who play both leagues and administrators to sacrifice another night of their week. This is especially taxing to these people when men's/women's trainings are on as well (there are only so many nights in a week!). In any case, different league nights just means even less mixing between PUL & SUL. I agree that if you want to mingle with SUL players, then join their league, or turn up at 6pm to throw with them.

As for socialising I have to agree that WAFDA does not control where and when you socialise with other players on a weekly basis. I only play PUL. Sometimes I turn up at 6:30 and sometimes 7pm. Once I'm cleated I go around chatting to friends on sidelines or watch my friends play. If you go to the pub afterwards, you can get a dominos pizza for $5 and eat it at the Wembley (they have no problem with this once their kitchen is closed). WAFDA does realise the importance of maintaining the social aspects of Ultimate hence we try our best to offer social events at tournaments, disc golf days and the Xmas Party. These social functions need the support of all members to make them successful and worthwhile for WAFDA to provide (its not healthy for Anna to drink $1000 worth of free beer herself EVERY christmas party!)

A social committee is a great idea, if anyone wants to volunteer for it, we'll make a position for you!

Re:1 PUL game and playing later - 2007/10/19 20:20 Great comments everyone - just a thought !
How many other sports play more than one game a night ? How many organise our social outings for us?
I get great pleasure in not being able to find a parking spot each Wednesday because it means that there are so many people playing ulti now.

Anna and the committee have done a fantastic job promoting the sport to a new level - not just on Wednesday nights either, and have enough on their hands.
A social committee could work well with the league organisers and maybe once a month have a Wembley social event after league, the PUL and SUL games could be mixed together so that each week you may play at a different time (still in different leagues). Maybe the winning team in SUL should move up to PUL and add another dimension to the competition....the possibilities are endless.
