WAFDA moving to club system - 2006/12/06 12:07 Hi,

There was a couple of posts today on the wa-ultimate mailing list regarding WAFDA moving to a more club-based environment.

The idea is that rather than having WAFDA be a single large club, WAFDA would instead encourage more clubs which would be affiliated with WAFDA. This is the same model that is used in other states.

The biggest upshot is in representation at Nationals - for example instead of choosing all the best players to be the 'WA A' team, all WA clubs would be entitled to try to qualify to send their team (or teams) to Nationals.

This change in structure will require a number of other changes thoughout many aspects of the Perth Ultimate community. Some of these will be easier than others.

What do you think? Is this a good idea? A bad idea? What will it mean for Ultimate in WA? Post below, reply, discuss, bring up points, read others, re-evaluate your own position.

Re:WAFDA moving to club system - 2006/12/06 13:33 Due to the relatively small player base in Perth I think it's important not to focus too much on club names.

E.g. I want to play elite Ultimate, and the top 20 players ultimately(hehe) will have different club background if it's the best team possible.

The new elite Thursday practice is a good start. But I believe it should be called "Elite practice" and not "Sublime A-practice" or whatever.

My main interest is gathering quality players, and I'd hate for that to be unsuccessful because of club names, club history, peoples biased expectations etc.

Re:WAFDA moving to club system - 2006/12/06 13:49 I think a club representation that is based on location would generally be a good start. Playing ultimate in more than one/two locations would improve the game's promotion and be a greater attraction for new recruits.

I think it is also important that clubs really define their purpose and scope. Ie will the club provide any of the following Ultimate Competitive/Social/Recruitment and then Mens/Womens/Mixed. It may be the case that clubs are able to do it all should they have a large enough player base and it may occur. Anyway I have a lot of thoughts however some of these are conflicting so I would support Anna's proposal for WAFDA and those interested in starting clubs to have a planning meeting following the AGM.

Re:WAFDA moving to club system - 2006/12/07 17:11 i understand that SA is a year or two ahead of us and just recently moved to a club-based rather than an association-based system. does anyone know how this has fared? i'm sure that whatever wa chooses to do will have teething problems but it may be worth getting in touch with SA to learn from their experience and avoid making any mistakes they feel could be avoided!

According to the SAFDA website, they have 3 non-university clubs setup. Not sure how much more setup they are than Fear, Sublime, Behemoth & Renegades etc

Re:WAFDA moving to club system - 2006/12/08 09:43 I can add to the SA bit - I was talking to Tim from Uni SA, Karma and Flycatchers at UniGames and he was saying that they tried the club thing in 2006 and felt that in order to remain competitive they would be sending a unified team to Nationals (implying that the club thing at Nats wasn't all that great). At least that's what I remember...
