Nationals in Perth - 2009/04/28 21:09 Firstly well done to all who worked on and participated in the recent AUC09.

Whilst there and in discussion with various people the topic of how the good the venue is usually came up. This lead to the thought that why aren't Nationals always held in Perth. Realistically UWA Sports park is the best venue in the country (if not the world) and that alone almost justifies having the tourney here on a regular basis. However, such a radical idea would generate howls of protest from eastern staters (especially during world's years).

If the WA ultimate community really wanted to I reckon we could put a solid proposal to the AFDA to consider Perth as venue for a number of consecutive AUCs. Rather than forever, we could say host nationals for a four-year consecutive block. The advantages are numerous in terms of organisational efficiencies, venue location and field quality, weather conditions, ease of transport compared to some other capital cities etc, etc. There are also many disadvantages such as travel costs from ES but we could look at ways to minimise these.

Sure, there'd be bucket loads of work to do but the advantages to the local ultimate community are huge.

What do you think? Anyone game?

Re:Nationals in Perth - 2009/04/28 21:34 It would be a tough sell, but is definitely worth a try.

The national life-saving championships have been held in Perth in 2007/08/09 - it would be worth talking to the organisers of that event to find out what advantages they found from having 3 consecutive nationals at the same venue, and how they managed to sell it to the rest of the country.

Certainly there would be great benefits to WA Ultimate, but I think we would have to come up with something more than just world-class grounds in order to get everyone on board.

I don't know what other longer-term benefits for Ultimate nationally that we would be able to offer as part of the package, this would be an important part of the proposal.

Are you volunteering to put together a proposal Mick?

No I'm not volunteering just wanting to start the debate. To get maximum local benefit from such an undertaking WAFDA would need to drive it and link it to local development programs (schools, uni etc).

I agree we need to sell much more than just the fields quality to convince the rest of the country. However I wouldn't discount how important good fields are since this is the first thing most people comment on when asked about how a tournament was.

I believe it would take at least a year or two of lobbying (to the rest of the country) before it would happen.

Re:Nationals in Perth - 2009/04/29 09:05 As fantastic as this idea is I think it may be something to put away for a few years.
Keeping an eye and ear out for the feedback, besides the fields being great and the organisation awesome, there is a bit of rumbling about the drop in numbers. 14 men's and 11 women's teams is not exactly what Australian Ultimate is after I think, and since most teams reside in the east/south, there is the thought that we need to have 2 fields of 16 before we start messing with the rotation formula.
However, I think it is something that would warrant further investigation into actual thoughts from AFDA, rather than hearsay from the players.
