Re:New division at Wednesday league - 2009/04/19 12:48 Personally, I agree with a 3 tier system, and that SUL should stay as the primary beginers leauge (ie with PUL players allowed to play to promote development), but the 1st and 2nd tiers as seperate entities is something I don't agree with.

One of the most well known and sucessful leagues in Australia is AFL, and looking at WAFL specifically for my example, this is what I think should be enacted:

WAFL clubs have their 1st team, then Colts reserves ect, and flow of players is free between these teams from week to week, as long as they are part of the club, their selection in any given team is completely up to club management. This is the sort of system I think WA ultimate should adopt.

With the clubs policies coming into effect, clubs are going to need to be form anyway, so why not make these specific clubs the basis for the leagues. For now, a 1st leauge and a 2nd league should be formed (as well as SUL, called whatever), and that player flow between the devisions fluid, completely at the descression of club management. Clubs can then enter their number 1 team in devision 1, and a second team in devision 2, with the aim of developing experienced SUL players. However, this will mean that clubs will require a coach/ senior player to choose teams each week, and perhaps require training sessions to allow 2nd devision players to interact with 1sts players, learn the skills/drills/plays, and prove themselves worthy of a spot in the 1st team.

A system like this would require some organisation, and while may not be possible straight away, it seems like a good direction to take when planning for the future of WA ultimate. While WAFL has their financial problems, since WA ultimate players pay their own fees, we won' have this, and will ultimately provide prestigue, development and publicity to the sport.

Re:New division at Wednesday league - 2009/04/28 12:06 Howdy all,

Remember me? Tall, skinny, no forehand?

I am psyched to hear the discussion about growing the available offerings for WAFDA members, but I want to emphasize something (that may be implicit in the discussion already...?) In order to have any number of divisions with a reasonably constant level of play/skill throughout time, There absolutely must be significant recruitment to continually feed new beginners into the introductory leagues as players improve and progress.

This was something that we didn't visualize and adapt to well after creating SUL. SUL was exactly what it was meant to be for about one year (+/-) before the league itself evolved because the average level of skill and experience of the players in the league changed.

I haven't read the paper Bakes posted, so I may have missed some important points. I think a 3 tier system of leagues would be a great development path for growing players, but WAFDA must spend a significant amount of effort recruiting beginners to maintain the beginner level in the beginner league.

Cheers,
Rusty

Re:New division at Wednesday league - 2009/05/01 15:45 In terms of recruitment, we were talking about this the other night, one of the girls in my SUL team was mentioning that her brothers were playing ulti in high school and loving it, and were considering coming down.

I remember playing in PE in yr 11 and enjoying the sport, but had no idea how to get involved outside school.

How hard would it be to put in calls to schools around Perth saying: Do you teach ulti, if so can you hand out leaflets to your students with contact details for clubs, as I'm sure this would easily lift numbers in the sport.

Although UWA Ultimate probably won't be taking this approach (as we have our own methods of recruitment around uni that are working), there is no reason for once clubs are formed, that they get out into the community to boost their numbers, all it would take is a couple of phone calls and some leaflets...

These players would be the target player group for SUL, leaving more experienced to play 2nd devision.

Re:New division at Wednesday league - 2009/05/27 09:29 two comments from me:
1) I definitely support training sessions for SUL players - I've found the training and camps excellent

2) be careful with drafting players in the more social side of things. One of the reasons I enjoy playing is because of the team I play in - I've very little interest in being in a team I don't enjoy playing with. This might be particularly so for women players who can feel sidelined by the blokes.

Re:New division at Wednesday league - 2009/06/22 09:27 Judging by the current team numbers for division one (6 teams). Who and how will it be decided which 4 teams may play div one?
