Re:New division at Wednesday league - 2009/02/18 10:25 It seems to me that the idea of 2DUL would be to develope players once they have the basic skills and rules from SUL, and are therefore looking for a place to develope, rather than learn. If 2DUL and PUL were run at the same time, who would be there to teach them zones, horizontal or other stratergies?

Would it then be suggested that these should be taught in training session rather than on the field?

I am all for 3 leagues, and think that 2DUL and PUl should be club based to give players a feeling of identity. I also assume it would be expected that PUL then has matching playing shirts?

Mostly correct. They would still be learning some new skills (and rules), as well as developing skills already learned in SUL.

If 2DUL and PUL were run at the same time, who would be there to teach them zones, horizontal or other stratergies?
This is an excellent point. The original idea described in the document takes the top 4 teams from PUL, leaving a number of other experienced teams/players that would NOT be in PUL and remain in 2DUL. This would allow a transfer of skills from those experienced players to the newer players. Having a draft system for PUL where individuals (rather than teams) would enter the league would pretty much drain the entire pool of experienced players available in 2DUL, leaving nobody to lift the level of the 2DUL league. Not a good outcome.

Another possible solution is some sort of training sessions; perhaps we could shorten the 2DUL game length and add a 20min training session or something, maybe covering 1 new individual skill or team skill per week...?

There would be other opportunities, such as development weeekends for the intermediate level players to introduce them to new skills to which they might not otherwise be exposed.

Re:New division at Wednesday league - 2009/02/25 22:58 I personally am really keen to have the third league start next season, even if it is just 4 teams to get it started, will reduce the crowding of male players in League and in some places in SUL.

As a brainstorm Idea it could be run like this:

SUL 6.25 to 7.10
2DUL 7.15 to 8.15
PUL 8.20 to 9.40

Basic rule for 2DUL

1.) Max Roster 15 Players with 5 of them Women
2.) A Maximum of 4 PUL players (max 2 PUL women) can be on the roster for each team with only 3 on the field at any one time.
3.) If agreed on particular night a team need extra PUL player then 5 point penalty apply per extra PUL player on the field.

Its only a 5 minute break between games but I am sure we can all cope with this.

Thats it have a think about it people as I believe we need to set up something before we do the silly thing and turn people away due to our current teams being full.

Cheers

do you mean that players may only play in one of Div 1 OR Div 2 but not both (no overlap in players)?quote]

Yes. Although perhaps it could be relaxed for women if they aren't run concurrently.

Re:New division at Wednesday league - 2009/03/24 17:53 I think the 3 division idea is great; I was just talking to another DI player yesterday and we both think that eventually we might want to move to PUL, but thought we would probably be whooped for the first few seasons (much like we were playing SUL).

I think running SUL and PUL concurrently is a better option. If 2DUL is aimed for transition between SUL and PUL, then it should be that players can play SUL, then a 2DUL game, which will open them up to higher competition.

For players wanting to move from 2DUL to PUL, playing PUL first then a 2DUL game will give them a competitive option, then a chance to work on some issues identified in the PUL game. Alternatively, experienced players can play PUL competitively, then adopt a "coaching" role in the next 2DUL game (like how SUL/PUL currently works, but with a reversed time slot).

The people who might miss out are those comfortable in 2DUL, a bit too good for SUL, but not good enough to be permanently in PUL. That is, they might want to play SUL as a coaching player, play 2DUL competitively, and play PUL to challenge themselves. In this case you might need to have different time slots for every game!

I don't think that PUL level players should be playing in SUL teams if we move to a 3 tier system. SUL is designed to teach the basics of ultimate, and 2DUL is to teach what they need to know to make it in PUL. I think any coaching role should only come from one tier above.

So allow PUL players to play/coach in 2DUL, and allow 2DUL players to play/coach SUL. Having PUL level players actively playing in SUL teams (as opposed to standing off the field and coaching like traditional coaches) seems unnecessary; like having Kevin Rudd explain how to fill in the voting paper for the Senate.

I think PUL players are overqualified for the job of playing on SUL teams (do you really learn much about ultimate by having someone on your team who can throw forehand into the wind the entire length of the playing field?), but they would be perfect for 2DUL teams: to teach the strategies and techniques that you need for more competitive games.

Re:New division at Wednesday league - 2009/03/26 10:38 I'd like to see a third division a.s.a.p.. It's been a while since I rad the paper but I remembered a section that mentioned the appearance of only 4 PUL teams (out of 18 in total). Why don't you split the teams into 3 pieces? Otherwise it could be quite boring playing only against three other teams.
