New division at Wednesday league - 2009/01/30 14:57 I have posted a discussion paper in the download section. The document describes a potential new model for league that introduces a new division between the SUL and PUL leagues. The aim is to make it easier for beginners to enter SUL, and improve the overall standard of ultimate by providing simpler pathways for players to progress as they gain experience.

The paper contains lots of ideas, pros and cons, and questions. I don't have all the answers, which is why we need discussion. Please download and read the document, read it again, take notes, then post your feedback here.

Re:New division at Wednesday league - 2009/02/02 11:04 I think that PUL and 2DUL should be run concurrently as that will eliminate a large proportion of the skill differences we are currently experiencing in PUL. I believe that you still need PUL quality players in SUL teams to guide them and teach them skills. The ninjas team benefitted greatly from having JD play with them in an early SUL and pointing them in the right direction before leaving them to develop their own style. We need more of this in SUL and then it will work its way up to 2DUL. I believe it would be pointless to move to a 3 tier league if ppl are still able to play in the new PUL and 2DUL (which will effectively be the same as the current PUL)

Apart from that I am all for three leagues especially if we make PUL a draft system similar to the NSW model.

Re:New division at Wednesday league - 2009/02/02 11:41 I agree a new format is required.

I would support the suggested schedule: PUL same as 2DUL. 3 tiers in separate timeslots could work if player restrictions are in place and actually followed. Remembering we don't want players to only have access to playing one game per week. Why would we limit how many games ppl can play? At the moment I think we just have limited options.
Eg. Receiver in PUL may want to work some handling skills in 2DUL but might not be able to make the SUL games.
2DUL could be for clubs or club sponsored teams.
I would also agree with a draft system for PUL.
I would even support a 5/2 split to recognise lower female numbers.
If EVO was mixed it might work and it would work for mens but there is not the depth in women's alone right now.
Development pathway is critical for long term success.
SUL could host up to 10 teams, 2DUL 6 slots and PUL 4.

Re:New division at Wednesday league - 2009/02/06 11:34 I support the concept of a new division to ensure a pathway is available for players, whether it is played on another night or the same and there is no overlap between div 2 and div 1. I think experienced players should still be involved in SUL as they are primary recruiters. One suggestion maybe to switch SUL and PUL scheduling to encourage more social atmosphere post games probably for another discussion.

Training should not be overlooked either in a player's progression. There are opportunities with Nationals bound clubs and universities but outside of this there is little opportunity. Currently we have a number of players who play once a week and this is there only time to improve. As a beginner this will ensure that your progression is limited.

Therefore WAFDA should ensure that for each level of competition offered there is an equivalent training opportunity.

Nats/States/Uni/Development Camps training will probably covers most div 2 and div 1 PUL players. C&T are good but they are reasonably adhoc. Something like 30 min training session focusing on individual skills before league games year round could be offered to ensure new players can get a start on good fundamentals.

Re:New division at Wednesday league - 2009/02/08 20:45 After reading Bakes proposal I am for a new division in league. It would be nice to have them all at separate times because I like helping Social and the new division but be able to play at a high level as well.

Denyer is right about a the bit of coaching beginners. hard to teach and play a socially competitive game at the same time.

As a brainstorm suggestion only maybe have the first three weeks of social league each season as a train and play session. That is have about 30 minutes for the experience players teaching the basics and then have a friendly game against another social team but allowing stoppage time if a foul or violation occurs to explain better what it is and how it is resolved. These games do not count for points until the fourth week.

Whatever happens i believe that all people interested should come in at a meeting and discuss and decide how the new and old leagues should run.

Hopefully that way it helps the teachers teach and for beginners to get the hang of it instead of getting thrown in at the deep end. If social teams want to train after the three weeks they can then organise this with their teachers.

Cheers Gareth

Re:New division at Wednesday league - 2009/02/10 22:05 Denyer - when you say "and there is no overlap between div 2 and div 1" do you mean that the games are at different times so some players can play in both (no overlap in times) or do you mean that players may only play in one of Div 1 OR Div 2 but not both (no overlap in players)?

I agree more training of players at all levels is required, however I believe that as clubs become more established this becomes a club function, and not the responsibility of WAFDA. In the short term though WAFDA could introduce some initiatives to help get this started.
