Re:Womens Nationals Teams 2009 - 2008/10/06 10:40
This following post has been posted on behalf of Bec Rutter:
I think that its all getting a little political/tense already - but i'm a softy.... I am with Mac, i think that we need an open meeting run by an outsider (maybe Bakes?) so that everyone can know whats going on - cause not everyone reads WAFDA sites As someone who has not played Nats for a few years i feel a little out of the loop. If a rep from each 'team' could throw up thier options then everyone would be on the same page. I do feel that we should aim for and A and B if poss, what ever the team name(given the boys have only just started to have 2 teams) and as its in Perth we have an advantage and yes we will probably get 2 teams - but what about next year too??
And maybe if Primal is already established then we all join Primal? but i think that everyone will be interested in what each team is about before they make any big decisions - and i think that we need to get onto this soon..... Maybe after SUL beofre PUL?? or after all of them?? Is anyone else keen for a meeting, or if team organisers in particular are keen on this idea.

Re:Womens Nationals Teams 2009 - 2008/10/06 10:46
These posts seem to be going in circles, but I thought I would put in my two cents. Cent 1: As far as the women's league, I don't think that the female player base in WA is big enough to be putting restrictions on who can participate and thus turning people away. It's important to remember that we were all beginners at some point and we were all given the opportunity to learn from players who were more experienced than ourselves. Cent 2: It is a fact of sport and competition that not everyone will win. Because the interest in nationals is usually low, players here in Perth have fallen into an attitude of entitlement. People feel that just because they want to play in nationals, they are entitled to a spot. This is not always the reality, and I'm sure that players from the eastern states (or places other than Perth) could tell you that. I think it is great that there are 3 teams being put forward for nationals this year. It will raise the level of competition and play in WA women's ultimate. I will do my best for the team I play for, and I hope that I will qualify for nationals. However, I fully understand that there is a possiblity I will not qualify, and I am prepared to deal with that.

Re:Womens Nationals Teams 2009 - 2008/10/06 11:06
I agree with Mac and Bec...a meeting would be good
I think we're all getting our wires crossed somewhere regarding Primal tho...
Primal arn't saying we have enough for 3-4 teams in total. I think we are all aware of the numbers we have...we will be lucky to get 3 full teams. That isn't the debate here.
I think everyone also agrees that we should all pool our resources, try out for one team, split into A and B and get the best teams possible for this nationals.
What Primal IS saying, is that we already have a club set up for women's ultimate in WA and we want to offer it as the "base" for this megateam! We have done a good bit of work on this club. For instance: 1. We're incorporated 2. We've got a bank account...with a running BALANCE! 3. we've gotten funding from various sources and are always looking for other sounces 4. we've got a LOT of equipment: cones, discs, first aid kits, promotional items 5. we've got external coaching prospects for the upcoming nationals which will be soon confirmed! 6. we have a selection process set up in which the women interested will vote on selectors, and then these selectors will choose the team.
Isn't this what we all want???
What I don't understand is why are we not using these resources??? I think everyone agrees that we should move on from the "differences" we had last year and do what's best for WA women's ultimate. Everyone agrees what's best is to all try out for one team. So WHY can't we all try out for the team thats ALREADY there??? A try out IS overall grading of players.
Like I said before, I didn't have the best time last year either, but we're all grownups here and I think a few questions should be asked about why you don't think Primal can offer the "base" for this women's team...
Is it because you don't want to be called "Primal"? Really, who cares what the team is called?
Is it because you don't want to play with certain people? How is this going to be any different if we all try out for some other team?
Like I said before, if Primal isn't meeting your playing needs, then that's fine...but I think it would be silly to dismiss Primal based on personal clashes alone.
that's just my opinion...and although most will think it's due to who my "friends" are....it's not. It just makes sence to use the resources available to us.

Re:Womens Nationals Teams 2009 - 2008/10/06 11:54
Primal is more than happy to send representatives to a meeting (chaired by someone like Bakes). I would suggest a different night to League, a proper forum e.g. DSR conference room, where we can sit and focus on issues at hand.
Yes, women's league and nationals teams are separate issues. Though there is commonality in player numbers. Whether we have one big WA tryouts or separate Club tryouts, I don't believe any player should be turned away. In the end, the selection process will decide who is skillful and dedicated enough to make the team. It is the reality of sport that some players, not matter how good, will miss out. This seems "unfair" on an individual level, but it is the best "team" that goes to Nationals and not just the best individuals.
Primal aims to provide the base for WA women's Ultimate, regardless of where Nationals is held. Its great to have so many players enthusiastic about Nationals being in Perth, but what happens the next 4-5 years when Nationals will be elsewhere? Personally I have been through the years of WA teams that came and went, I believe we underperformed in those years and was most disappointed that we didn't even field a WA team in 2006 (yes, ONLY 2 years ago!). The men have also gone through this, until Sublime formed in 2004, and through the persistence of JD and support from WA men, Sublime has grown in numbers and in performance status. These are the tangible benefits of a Club structure that Primal aims to achieve.
So the million dollar question is - WHY? What is the reason that Primal can not be the base for WA-wide tryouts?

Re:Womens Nationals Teams 2009 - 2008/10/06 12:21
Sorry girls,
this is ridiculous....
people were asked by hutch if they were putting in a team to try out for nationals.
3 teams replied - Primal, a south of the river team, and another un named team.
The un named team said on the website that trials will be held in november...
Primal has been quite open about our process on this forum and a few posts ago - deb stated exactly what PRIMAL was doing...
The south of the river team - they seem to be sorted and fine...
So ---- what is the big deal going on??? i don't understand what all the fuss is about. Primal was told during nationals training for nats 08 that there was going to be another team going for nats 09.
Primal said - great. no worries. So Primal kept moving forward and have made our plans for nats 09 campaign. am i right so far?? i think i am.
Now - it seems this other un named team want to back out of their situation and not make their own team. is this right?
If so - if making your own team is not working out for you, then grow up. Decide if you will try out for PRIMAL or not, and do what is best for you.
I don't understand all the fuss. Primal has always been going to put a team together. everyone knew this. if you don't want to play for primal for whatever reason, then don't. if you do, then PLEASE come to our try outs.
why is there a need for a get together for a discussion? it seems pretty simple to me. if you want to play, then pick a team/club and go for it.
All the best...

Re:Womens Nationals Teams 2009 - 2008/10/06 14:22
THIS POST IS FROM SALLY "CINO" RAY
OK so here it is from the as such 'un named team'. All I want is to expand women's ultimate. I think Primal (and those heavily involved in the club) have done a terrific job in getting it registered and incorporated. It's no easy feat to start a club from scratch and keep it going during times of limited numbers of women ulti players who are willing to put in the time and effort to compete at Nationals. Therefore please don't get the wrong idea by thinking that I don't think Primal holds a very important position with women's ultimate. It's an established club with strong friendships and team spirit that has done a great job in taking it to the Eastern State's teams.
However, to breed competition in Perth we need more than one club who is competative. Without expansion the sport will be nothing, and if Primal have no one else to play against than they won't develop and neither will anyone else. Perth is too isolated to be able to travel to tournaments to play against others, and there just isn't the numbers of women here to truly develop the sport as yet. Therefore another team is required to work in conjunction with Primal to develop women, compete against each other, and take it to the East. There probably are enough girls who want to play Nationals '09 to form two teams, but too many to all play with Primal. Therefore we should be concentrating on developing two competative teams, and then work together to develop women's ultimate as a whole.
