Re:WAFDA moving to club system - 2006/12/08 10:11 I can add to the SA bit - I was talking to Tim from Uni SA, Karma and Flycatchers at UniGames and he was saying that they tried the club thing in 2006 and felt that in order to remain competitive they would be sending a unified team to Nationals (implying that the club thing at Nats wasn't all that great). At least that's what I remember...

This is correct - I was in Adelaide a couple of months ago and heard much the same thing. They decided that their club teams at Nats would not be competitive enough, as their better players were spread over multiple teams instead of a single State Team.

The other side of this is that more players would be playing and gaining Nationals experience, which would be better for SA Ultimate in the longer term but with a short-term drop in rankings.

I think it's important that if WA decide to have a 'State'/unified team (which we may need to do, at least for the first year) then control of the selection process should be in the hands of WAFDA, not a single club.

The number of people willing to go to a given event might dictate the course of this anyway - there was no selection process required for Nationals this year as only a dozen or so people were willing to go to the tournament.

Re:WAFDA moving to club system - 2006/12/08 11:47 Perth for the past 8 years has had a club based system.
UWA, Murdoch and Fear(WAPET) have been clubs for 8 years plus and have played Phoenix, league and other comps as a club team.
Why change the system we have and continue to allow all players to enjoy playing Nationals and other interstate comps when they want.

I'd slightly alter that. I think WAFDA should have guidelines or recommendations for WA teams to follow. Most likely these being a requirement of receiving WAFDA financial support and endorsement (i.e. representing WA)

However I think the responsibility for going to nationals rests with individuals, then groups of individuals, then (one-off) teams, then clubs (multi-year teams). WAFDA's role should be to encourage and grow these groups that support the WAFDA's long and shorter term aims.

Re:WAFDA moving to club system - 2006/12/12 08:20 Well in the past Nationals Clubs have been Sublime and Behemoth.

From the prospective of players who've had some nationals experience I would like to play in the best team I can at Nationals. It is a significant investment to travel there so we should field a strong team to at least compete with the top clubs. This doesn't have to a be a WA team, more the Club captains may decide on a selection process and those interested can try out.

I played 2004 Nats with Death by Croc, a team similar to Behemoth at the time, it was my first Nats and despite the fact we came 19 of 21 teams, the experience was invaluable. I probably did more and had more responsibility in that team than I have had in previous tournaments excluding Worlds.

Re:WAFDA moving to club system - 2006/12/12 08:32 I would also point out a club can have two teams that can be very competitive as shown by Fakulti at this years Nationals.

Re:WAFDA moving to club system - 2006/12/27 16:01 Posted on aus.sport.frisbee regarding club grants.

Hey all,

I thought I might start some discusiion for people thart might be interested in applying for club grants.

This year Flinders Uni has been successful in getting nearly $8000 in grants from the state and federal government.

We applied through the state Department for Recreation and Sport, SA for just over $4500 to set up and run a coaching training program (using the AFDA course) and a social league here at the uni,
specifically to target the recruitment of more women into the sport.

We have money for line marking equipment, scoreboards, cones, shade tents, coaching accreditation, first aid courses, discs, first aid kits and more.

Most states have a department like this which offer similar grants every 6 months. There is plenty of money out there for people intrested in making Australia more healthy.

Just google "department of recreation and sport" and you'll get plenty of entries with links to sites with more info.

We also applied for a federal government grant under the "Volunteer Small Equipment Grants" which rewards volunteers for their efforts. This is pretty much money for enjoying what you do more, with little
restriction.

We successfully got over $3000 for a laptop computer with video editing software and a digital video camera.

You can find this grant here:
http://www.facs.gov.au/internet/facsinternet.nsf/aboutfacs/programs/s...

For both grants I had recommendations from our sports association, the state association (SAFDA) president, and the AFDA CEO (pottsy) all of whom were more than happy to provide a few positive words about what we
were doing.

For the most part it's simply a matter of dotting the 'i's and crossing the 't's. Give them everything they ask for and it's pretty straight forward.

Anyway, hope this has helped. Send me a line if you want to ask me anything or are thinking about applying yourself.

Feel free to add your own insight into applying for grants from your experiences.
