Re:Mens Premier League - 2007/09/04 09:59 A men's premier comp would be worthwhile. I couldn't commit to another night a week, others may be able to. I do like the WAUFL idea that was trialled awhile back, and I think this could be resurected. As bakes mentioned, just needs to fit in to the calendar of events. And maybe Hat WAUFL could work..not sure...

Twiggy, I agree with the half paced shit, but as for the hucking game, that's part of Ultimate, If you don't like it you just need to shut it down and win. Do that and they'll stop hucking!

Re:Mens Premier League - 2008/04/14 21:50 I have to say that the time for a Men’s League is HERE. The first point to make (I’ve mentioned this one or two hundred times over the last couple years) is that not every Ultimate player in WA will be able or even willing to play in every possible Ultimate game that is offered. In fact, the best situation we could ask for is that there is so much Ultimate on offer in Perth and in WA that there is no way a single player could be part of it all. As long as people are limiting the Ultimate on offer to days and times that are convenient for the current playing population, then this sport will not grow substantially in WA. In order for a Men’s league to succeed it will most likely deplete PUL to some extent. BUT THAT DOESN'T MATTER. There is a drastic unbalance of men vs women in PUL as it is. If there are players who would rather play Men’s Ultimate than Mixed Ultimate, then we want them playing Men’s and not Mixed. How else do we expect to attract and retain players? Ideally WAFDA would be able to offer member players every kind of Ultimate they desired. (resourcing is another topic alltogether)

There would surely be enough interest for a 2 team competition, probably 3 and possibly 4 teams at a stretch. There would be an administrative burden that WAFDA probably doesn’t have the capacity to shoulder at the moment, but WAFDA is a member-run, volunteer organization. Someone who wants to play in this type of competition (and who doesn’t have kids) should bloody well step up and organize the thing. It wouldn’t take a huge amount of work, especially with some guidance from the WAFDA committee about how it could be done. I would love to play in an 8 week Men’s league. I wouldn’t mind if it were against the same team every week, as long as the teams are roughly even and there was some genuine competition. Offering this sort of “product” is the only way that the skill level of Men’s Ultimate is going to improve in WA. With a bit of work the same thing could be done with a women’s league.

Someone do it! I’m ready to sign up (for Men’s, not Women’s)!

Re:Mens Premier League - 2008/05/02 09:54 Now that WAFDA is prepping to put a bid in to host Nationals 2009, the committee is seriously considering starting a premier league to cultivate elite Ultimate. Major questions for members:

1. When? Another weeknight besides Wed? Sunday morning? Sunday arvo?

2. League or Tournament structure? Play in a weekly league or play a half day tourney every few weeks?

3. Club or Hat teams? How should teams be selected? Club teams who train together to field a team or should teams be evened out via a draft system?

This feedback from the Ultimate population will help the committee determine how best to run this elite competition - what would gather most support & commitment from players to make this venture effective and sustainable.

This Premier League should indeed be played at an elite level. Whether it be Club or Hat teams, each team should train and seek to improve in order to maintain an elite level of play as you would at Nationals.

(Ladies - I will start a new thread to specifically address Women's elite development)
