We all want to win..but... - 2007/09/20 10:21 The Social Ultimate League has been a tremendous success and WAFDA should be congratulated. And naturally we all go out win, even in the Social League. But I'm a little concerned that we are not giving Ultimate newbies a decent chance to learn the game.

Over the last couple of weeks newbies on my team, the Ultimatums, have been hand blocked and poached. Now I know a hand block is very satisfying, but on a beginner?! And when I say beginner here I mean first and second game players!!!! What does that teach them? And poaching is the same...what value in teaching beginners a bad habit for even experienced players.

Now I would not like to see WAFDA establish seperate rules for SUL, so maybe team captains could ask their players, in the spirit of the game, to give newbies at least a chance to get the throw off and resist the poaching temptation.

Cheers - ballen

Re:We all want to win..but... - 2007/09/20 11:40 One thought I had after reading this was for the Captains, and div one players in SUL to get together and discuss a way forward.

Rules are rather clear on what is permitted or not permitted. THe gathering can nut out some acceptable behaviour and move forward.

Hand blocks are going to happen, but poached hand blocks are naughty. Lets turn this around and make a positive of it.

Re:We all want to win..but... - 2007/09/20 13:06 My issue is a hand blocks made by the marker, I don't think these are acceptable. Sure a block down field is OK, but at least allow the newbie player to get their pass away.

Good idea though to get the captains together, I think Anna is planing this next week.

Re:We all want to win..but... - 2007/09/20 13:30 Only problem with hand blocks by the marker is they can be unintentional. I would suggest that instead of saying no hand blocks, that Div 1 markers, step back to a distance of a metre. This gives the thrower a comfort zone where they can move freely and get the disc away.
If a hand block occurs, then it is of a much lower impact, as the thrower was give 'resonable chance' to throw.

If a player steps in, the call of too close can be used.

I have played a corporate cup version of this rule set and found it rather good for beginners.

Just a suggestion.
